Planning tools help you decide what a website contains before anyone designs or builds it. A sitemap shows every page and how pages connect. A wireframe shows what goes on each page, in what order, without colors or photos to distract from structure. Agencies have used these steps for years, and AI tools now make them fast enough for a small business or a solo freelancer to use too.
The usual workflow looks like this. You describe the business and its customers, and an AI tool proposes a sitemap: home, services, a page per service, about, contact, perhaps location pages or a resources section. You edit that list until it matches how customers actually look for you. Then each page becomes a wireframe built from standard sections such as a hero, a list of features, a set of questions and a call to action. Only after the structure is agreed do you choose fonts, colors and photos.
Doing this first saves real time. Most website projects that run long do so because pages and content keep changing during design and build. Agreeing on structure early, with a client or with yourself, makes the later steps faster. It also tends to produce better sites, because each page gets a clear job instead of being a place to put leftover content.

Visual sitemap builder for planning page structure and content blocks, with AI that can suggest a sitemap.
AI design tool that turns prompts, screenshots and sketches into editable mockups for websites and apps.
AI wireframing and design tool for non-designers that turns screenshots and text into editable wireframes.
Planning tool for sitemaps, user flows and wireframes, used to agree on structure before a site is built.
Sitemap and content planning tool for websites, with a diagram maker and import of an existing site's pages.
The tools here differ in how far they go. Some focus on sitemaps and content planning and export to diagrams or spreadsheets. Others create detailed wireframes or mockups and export to Figma, Webflow or code. Some read screenshots or rough sketches and turn them into editable designs. Check which export you need for the next step of your process, because a plan that has to be redrawn by hand loses much of its value.
Planning tools are also useful for an existing site. Importing the current pages into a sitemap shows duplicate pages, orphaned pages nobody links to, and gaps where customers ask questions the site never answers. Many redesigns start with that audit, and it often shows the site needs fewer pages, each doing more. Share the draft sitemap with whoever answers customer calls, because they know what people ask.
Generated copy in wireframes is placeholder text. It helps you judge length and layout, and it is never ready to publish. Write the real content against the agreed structure, ideally before the visual design is finished, so the design fits the words you actually have.
Even a five-page site benefits from a short list of pages and what each one is for. It keeps the site focused and makes writing easier. A planning tool is optional for very small sites, but writing the list down is worth doing every time.
A wireframe shows structure: which sections go on a page and in what order, usually in gray boxes. A mockup adds the visual design, with real fonts, colors and images. Wireframes come first so structure can be agreed before design choices distract from it.
Mostly no. They plan structure and design, then export to a design tool, a builder such as Webflow, or code. Building, hosting and publishing happen in a separate tool, so check which exports each planning tool supports.
Treat it as placeholder text. It shows roughly how long each section should be and what it should cover. Replace it with your own content about your services, customers and results before anything goes live.
